Reducing material consumption
Reducing material consumption is one of Nexans’ three industrial priorities. The “TMC” (Theoretical Minimum Cost) method is used in each plant and supported by a customized training program. The goal of this program is to limit manufacturing waste and excessive consumption by trying to find the perfect adaptation of our cables and connector assemblies to our customers’ actual needs using an approach based on quality and design-to-cost.
- Design-to-cost uses marketing, development and industrialization techniques to define the precise performance of a cable and ensure it has the optimal composition, thereby conserving raw materials without impacting performance for our customers.
- Downstream, the delivery of ready-to-install cables contributes to reducing scrap.
- And finally, after doing everything we possibly can to reduce waste, our Group also offers a full product recycling solution.

Energy efficiency in our plants
By improving the energy efficiency of our plants, we can reduce our energy consumption by up to 20%, across utilities and processes.
Pilot projects and energy efficiency initiatives are underway in various countries. Posters, discussions and information sharing are just some of the techniques being used on a large-scale across Nexans. Energy conservation awareness and training are conducted at every level of the Group.
- For utilities, measurement campaigns and consumption audits allow us to ensure that our networks (compressed air, steam, water, etc.) are operating correctly; adjust contracts; and choose lighting, heating and air conditioning equipment that is more economical. We place a particular emphasis on challenges related to individual behavior (either turning off equipment and installations or operating them in a more economical way).
- For processes, we plan to calibrate the energy efficiency of each of our processes in order to identify best practices and generalize their implementation.
Logistics optimization
In terms of logistics, we are focusing our efforts on the optimization of truck weight, volume and loading, cable drum management, the mitigation of urgent last-minute delivery situations and the development of fluvial and maritime transportation, where possible.
