Milton Keynes, 5th April 2011 - Nexans have supplied power accessories used to connect cables within the 500kW concept demonstrator unit at The European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) Tidal site in Orkney. This has been generating since September 2010 and provides power for up to 300 homes. EMEC offers developers the opportunity to test full scale grid connected prototype devices in unrivalled wave and tidal conditions and is an industry leader in the development of marine-based renewable energy.
Tidal Generation Limited (TGL), is at the forefront in the design, development and manufacture of tidal stream turbines for the capture and conversion of tidal energy to electrical power. Based in Bristol (UK), TGLs core business is the provision of equipment and maintenance services to tidal power developers world-wide.
Nexans supplied separable connectors, cold shrink terminations and pre-terminated leads for the tidal generator unit. Nexans were the only company able to supply and install the products in the timescale required. The project started in early 2010 and in September 2010 with the site visit of Jon Rhodes, who is responsible for the pre-terminated leads manufacture at NPA, the installation was completed.
Nexans were selected as a supplier on the basis of their separable connector system and range of supporting products which include surge arrestors and pre-terminated leads.
Ian Hattersley, Business Development Manager, Nexans Power Accessories says ‘This project is another great example of how Nexans can work in close cooperation with our customers to deliver a full range of products for the tidal generation sector which is a dynamic new market’.
Nexans Power Accessories are in discussions with TGL on a number of other projects and hope to supply further products for their new 1MW generator due for release later this year.
