Nexans have supplied steel wired armoured power cable to help Hauxton Playgroup take advantage of a unique opportunity to move into dedicated accommodation. The new buildings will be located at Hauxton School, near Cambridge. A local company has offered Hauxton Pre-School a high-quality 4-bay mobile building which is just three years old and another has offered to manage and cover the cost of transferring and re-assembling the building at Hauxton.
Critical though are the utilities and connections from the Primary School to these buildings, Nexans Logistics UK were approached and have very generously provided the cabling solution to “complete the circuit”. Hauxton School Governors strongly support the project and are extremely grateful to Nexans and their management team.
This is a flying start for a concept that started in December 2010. The aim is to open the new facility in Autumn 2011. The new setting will increase provision from 24 to 30 children, can operate 5 days per week and have a much-needed breakfast club, for the benefit of the playgroup and school. A planning application has now been placed.
Hauxton is a small village of 330 homes, 4 miles south of Cambridge. Hauxton Playgroup has operated successfully from Hauxton Village Hall for the past 35 years. The Pre-School is currently unable to offer parents flexibility with their Nursery Education Funding because the hall is used by other community groups that share the premises. The Village Hall is a Victorian schoolroom with only one main room, and very limited storage space. All equipment is set out and put away every session. Hauxton village is about to undergo major housing development, and this will double its population and housing stock. It is expected that this will increase the demand for pre-school places at Playgroup.
Overall it is believed that the project will offer excellent value for money and be a notable example of private/public collaboration currently attracting much media coverage.
The Council grant will not cover all of the costs and the Playgroup is therefore still dependent on sponsorship, donations pro-active fundraising to enable the building to be adapted, services to be connected and the site to be secured and equipped as a play area and what Nexans have provided is seen as critical.
