High Speed plastic optical fiber: one of the most promising developments for future networks

Nexans presents the plastic optical fiber in data and video network

Paris, October 15, 2004 - Nexans, the worldwide leader in the cable industry has announced its participation in the Opto 2004 Trade Fair that is to be held from October 19 to 21 in Paris at Paris Expo, Porte de Versailles, Hall 7.1 (Stand J28).

Nexans will be making the following demonstrations on the Optics Club Stand (J28) and will give a preview of this upcoming technology:

  • local networks for data communication: Ethernet gigabit network over plastic optical fiber (for large enterprises (backbone) as well as medium and small offices (fibre to the office/desk)
  • data communication in residential cabling: new concept of all optical home networking
  • leisure/residential: high-speed 'Firewire' connections for digital cameras and multimedia devices
  • high quality video: high-speed DVI connections for Digital cameras and multimedia devices
  • demonstration of plastic optical fiber connection: the connection components for plastic optical fibers are as easy to install as those for copper wires

Plastic optical FiberThe demonstrators and products presented by Nexans at the Opto trade fair bear witness to the Group's dynamic efforts in Research & Development. Nexans invests about 50 million euros in R&D, a priority line in its policy. This financial and human investment - Nexans' R&D team comprises 500 research scientists, engineers and technicians - enables the Group to not only reinforce its status and leader in cables and accessories (quality, performance, competitiveness, environmental friendliness) but also prepare the markets of the future.
