New NX200 PLUS fire-safety cables used in primary school safety systems

April 2 2007 - Paris. Nexans, the worldwide leader in the cable industry, has announced that Cheshire County Council is one of the first users of its new enhanced ALSECURE® fire-resistant building cable. Three Cheshire primary schools have already been fitted with new fire detection and alarm systems using ALSECURE NX 200 PLUS cable, as part of the council’s ongoing project to bring its establishments up to the latest fire safety standards.
.
ALSECURE cable could potentially be used in other Cheshire schools as the Council puts more fire-safety system work out to tender. The new alarm systems at Elworth Church of England Primary School, Millfield Primary School and Vinetree Primary School were installed by Eric Charlesworth (Electrical Contractors) Ltd, who praised the ALSECURE cables for their ease of installation.
Saving time and money
The company’s maintenance contracts manager Nick Copeland said that using the flexible soft-skin ALSECURE cable instead of rigid mineral insulated cable had saved both time and money.
“It is much more flexible and is more user friendly than other fire cables, while still providing the same level of fire protection and evacuation period,” he said.
“We were able to complete the installation in four weeks instead of the five weeks it would take to install a fire alarm system based on rigid mineral insulated cable.
“The contract stipulated that all the cables in classrooms and corridors had to be hidden in trunking, and this was much less time-consuming using ALSECURE.”
The fire alarm system project was specified by MMA Consulting Engineers and the ALSECURE cable was supplied by Stoke-on-Trent wholesaler Rexel Senate.
Continued operation of safety systems
ALSECURE NX200 PLUS is part of a range of new fire-resistant cables developed by Nexans to ensure the continued operation of building safety systems including fire detection, emergency lighting, voice alarm and public address, during the evacuation and fire-fighting period. NX200 cables are for use on all properties where an evacuation period of at least 30 minutes is required (in compliance with BS5839-8434 part1). NX200 PLUS cables are intended for installations where phased evacuation of at least two hours is required (in compliance with BS5839-8434 part 2), for example in schools, hospitals and high-rise buildings.
In addition to meeting extreme fire conditions for extended periods, the ALSECURE NX200 cables are halogen-free and flame retardant, with minimal smoke emission.
Easy to install and handle
Nexans has paid particular attention to making the NX200 and NX200 PLUS cables easy to install. There are no extra tapes to remove, they are easy to strip and they retain their memory. The cables are supplied on easy carry colour-coded reusable plastic reels – with a unique pop-up handle. For fast and easy roll-outs the reels can also be used in conjunction with Nexans own rolling device system.
Complete range
The ALSECURE NX200 and NX200PLUS ranges offer a wide choice of core count and conductor sizes for use with AC and DC voltages of 300/500V. They are part of a range that will also include single-core and armoured cables as well as fire-reaction cables, and are backed-up by Nexans’ full UK technical and logistical support.
