When local artist and sculptor Jill Kitchen requested some scrap cable to make a 'birthday tree' the staff at Nexans Milton Keynes office were somewhat mystified.
As it turned out the Community Birthday Tree was created by Jill to help celebrate 20 years of the work of the Milton Keynes Community Foundation and 40 years since the city was created. The tree stands in an old cable drum and the branches are made from cable that has been stripped back to reveal the copper and aluminium cores.
Julia Seal, Chief Executive of the MK Community Foundation (pictured left) explained that the tree features acorns with messages from the various groups that have either benefited from or supported the Milton Keynes Community Foundation. The groups include Bletchley and District allotment association, MK Parks Trust, Interfaith MK, Youth Club Pre School, Brooklands Centre for the elderly and City Discovery Centre.
The tree has been a great success and is now on public display in the reception area of Acorn House in Milton Keynes. Twenty years ago the foundation was started with a grant of £5000 to help support local charity projects, by 2007 this had increased to £707,497 raised by local donors.
